We empower shop floor workers with our smart robots that assist with tedious and ergonomically challenging tasks, specifically in automated surface finishing. Our proprietary GMR-AI™ software is integrated with state-of-the-art industrial robots, sensors, and tools to create application-specific turnkey solutions for customers through a Robot-as-a-Service (RaaS) model.

About the Role

We help manufacturers improve the quality of life for their workforce while increasing production capacity and reducing scrap, repair, and rework costs. As a Robotics Engineering Intern, you will join our Customer Success team onsite in Carson, CA to spearhead advancements in robotic surface treatment applications. Your work will enhance manufacturing efficiency and precision while supporting GMR's mission to innovate and improve industry standards.

This is a paid 16-24 week internship running approximately August 2026 through March 2027. Candidates must be available to start no later than September 15, 2026.

Role and Responsibilities

  • Work alongside our Customer Success team and cross-functional partners to design, implement, and test systems for robotic surface finishing applications

  • Partner with Senior Application Engineers to support the development of robotic solutions

  • Participate in rigorous system testing and validation practices

  • Assist in proof-of-concept development for new customer engagements

  • Contribute to hands-on problem solving in a fast-paced, ambiguity-tolerant environment

  • Bring curiosity, attention to detail, and a drive to learn efficient ways of working

Export Control Requirements

In order to comply with the export regulations of the United States Government, it is required that the applicant must fall under one of the following categories: (i) U.S. citizen or national, (ii) U.S. lawful permanent resident (i.e. current green card holder), (iii) Refugee under 8 U.S.C. § 1157, or (iv) Asylee under 8 U.S.C. § 1158.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing or holding a bachelor's degree or higher in Robotics, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field

  • Experience in iterative design and prototyping of cyber-physical or mechatronic systems

  • Strong familiarity with AI tools for accelerated development

  • Exposure to general robotics welcome

  • Ability to read and interpret C++ and Python

  • Experience with ROS or ROS2

  • Strong communication and collaboration skills across multiple teams

  • Comfortable working in fast-moving environments with shifting priorities

Preferred Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing or holding an MS degree or higher in Robotics, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field

  • Industry or internship experience in autonomous manufacturing

  • Experience developing standard operating procedures and technical documentation

  • Hands-on experience with industrial robots and auxiliary systems

  • Strong programming skills in C++ and Python

  • Proficiency in 3D CAD design (any tool)

  • Familiarity with Linux environments

  • Experience with Visual Studio Code

  • Background in one or more of the following: dynamics, controls, motion planning, machine learning, computer vision, computational geometry, or robotics

  • Familiarity with Docker
