Optical Test and Characterization Engineer

NIL Technology (NILT), founded in 2006, is an optical solutions company designing, developing, and manufacturing optical elements and components using high-precision nanoscale features. The company is backed by several industry-independent investors: Jolt Capital, NGP Capital, Swisscanto, Vaekstfonden, and the European Innovation Council (EIC). NILT creates competitive advantages with flat optics in optical applications for 3D sensing, consumer electronics, machine vision, autonomous vehicles, telecommunication, and AR displays; all solutions made by diffractive optical elements (DOE) and metalenses/meta optical elements (MOE). NILT is based in Denmark and has offices in Switzerland, Sweden, US, and a manufacturing plant in Malaysia. Visit us at www.nilt.com.

Open position: Optical Test and Characterization Engineer

At NIL Technology we are looking for our new colleague for optical testing and characterization to join our Optics Team in Kgs. Lyngby, Denmark.

We are expanding our Optics Team with an optical test and characterization engineer for developing and implementing optical characterization and testing methods for metasurface based optical elements in development and mass production.

The main task will be to develop and implement testing procedures for both R&D purpose and for end-of-line optical testing in our production lines based on our existing R&D testing methods and procedures.

The work tasks will include organizing the daily characterization tasks in the optical characterization lab including planning of characterization tasks, upgrade and maintenance of the optical setups as well as hands-on characterization.

Apart from the optical testing itself, emphasis will be on data handling, data analysis, reporting and documentation.

We expect the candidate to have a good understanding of optical characterization and testing needs all the way from early product development to mass production.

The optical elements include for example metalenses and meta-surface based fan-out gratings and area diffusers. Typically, the components need to be quantitatively characterized with respect to for example optical efficiency, total transmission, reflectance, beam profile, point spread function (PSF), modulation transfer function (MTF) etc.

You will be part of our Optics Team, but you will also work cross organizationally with our production-, engineering- and prototyping- teams to support product development and to develop and implement optical testing strategies for mass production.

Essential duties and responsibilities of the position

  • Cross functional discussions to define test and characterization needs and specifications
  • Defining and implementing testing strategies for R&D and mass production
  • Daily coordination of characterization activities for supporting product development
  • Hands-on characterization
  • Prepare high-quality presentations and reports both for internal use and for customers
  • Structured validation and documentation of test and test methods

Key qualifications

  • Master/PhD in photonics, optics, physics, engineering or equivalent
  • Hands-on experience on laboratory optical characterization including:
  • setting up and performing optical measurements in an optical lab including automated hardware control and data acquisition
  • use of lasers, beam systems, and sensors in the visual and NIR
  • software for data analysis, data acquisition and hardware control (e.g. Python, µManager
  • Hands-on experience with optical testing for R&D and/or mass production
  • A critical mindset for assuring validity and accuracy of test data
  • Good to have: experience with optical testing in a production environment
  • Excellent presentation and communication skill

We value

  • Transparent, structured and analytical work approach
  • Excellent communication skills (in English as we are an international team)
  • Flexibility and ability to quickly change daily operations when needed

Start date: as soon as possible. The workplace will be Copenhagen, Denmark.

We will evaluate applications as they are received and we will be happy to receive your application as soon as possible and no later than Monday 23 June 2024.
