Optical Characterization Engineer
NIL Technology ApS
Create precision. Shape the future of meta‑optics.
Are you passionate about optical measurements, high‑precision characterization and enabling world‑class meta‑optical products? At NIL Technology (NILT), we are expanding our Optics Team and are looking for an Optical Characterization Engineer to help develop and implement the next generation of optical testing methodologies. This is a unique opportunity to work with cutting‑edge metasurface‑based optical components and help bring them from early R&D to robust mass production.
Joining us in our Kongens Lyngby office, you will work closely with dedicated colleagues in Optics, R&D, Engineering, Production, and Prototyping.
You will be part of an ambitious company where we win together. Team spirit and mutual success are key components in our everyday work culture.
Tasks and responsibilities
Organizing daily optical characterization activities
Coordinate and plan the daily operation of the optical characterization lab to support ongoing product development.
Develop and implement testing strategies
Define, design, and operationalize optical characterization frameworks for both R&D and end‑of‑line testing in mass‑production environments.
Hands‑on optical characterization
Perform optical measurements using lasers, free-space beam systems, sensors, automation setups and advanced optical bench configurations.
Maintain and optimize optical setups
Upgrade, maintain, and troubleshoot characterization setups to ensure stable, high‑quality measurement performance.
Data analysis, validation and reporting
Conduct structured data analysis, ensure measurement accuracy and repeatability, document methods, and prepare high‑quality reports and presentations for internal and external stakeholders.
Skills, experiences and qualifications we are looking for
- MSc/PhD in photonics, optics, physics, engineering, or equivalent
We welcome all lengths of experience within:
- Hands‑on experience in an optical lab, including hardware control and automated data acquisition
- Experience with lasers, beam systems, free-space optics and detectors in VIS and NIR
- Proficiency in software and scripting for data acquisition and automation (e.g., Python, µManager)
- Experience with optical testing for R&D and/or mass production
- Strong understanding of measurement quality (accuracy, precision, repeatability, system validation)
- Experience with optical testing in a production environment is an advantage
- Experience with metasurface‑based optics (metalenses, fan‑out gratings, area diffusers)
- Critical, analytical mindset ensuring data validity
- Excellent communication and presentation skills in English
