Mechanical Systems Engineer

Giving shape to wafer-level optics — together

Do you enjoy turning optical concepts into precise, robust and good-looking hardware?

As our new Mechanical Systems Engineer, you will strengthen our Modules team with optomechanical expertise. You will build the CAD models of our optical modules, define their optomechanical design, and help turn our demonstrators into professional, product-like devices that convince customers. This is a unique opportunity to grow your expertise in a fast-moving, multidisciplinary environment at the forefront of nano- and micro-optics innovation.

Based in our modern office and cleanroom facilities in Seehallen Horgen, right next to Lake Zürich, you will join an experienced, collaborative team of optics, electronics and process engineers dedicated to building next-generation optical modules and demonstrators.

You will be part of an ambitious company where we win together. Team spirit and mutual success are key components in our everyday work culture.

Tasks and responsibilities

Optomechanical Design

Define the optomechanical design of our optical modules, including lens and sensor holders, apertures, alignment features and housings. Translate optical requirements into mechanical concepts and set tolerances that make our modules robust and manufacturable.

CAD Modeling and Documentation

Create 3D CAD models, assemblies and 2D production drawings including GD&T, and maintain clean design data for internal builds, suppliers and customers.

Tolerance and Performance Analysis

Perform tolerance stack-up analyses and work with the optical design team to assess how mechanical tolerances, thermal effects and assembly processes affect optical performance.

Demonstrators and Product-Like Prototypes

Support the build-up of demonstrators and prototypes from concept to final assembly. Design housings, mounts and covers that make our demonstrators look professional and product-like for customer meetings and trade shows.

Manufacturing and Supplier Collaboration

Select suitable manufacturing processes such as CNC machining, 3D printing and injection molding, and work with external suppliers and module integrators to ensure parts are delivered on time and to specification.

Assembly and Test Fixtures

Design jigs, fixtures and alignment tools for module assembly and optical characterization in our lab and cleanroom.

Skills, experiences and qualifications we are looking for

  • Minimum 3 years as a mechanical or optomechanical development engineer in a high-tech, optical or consumer electronics environment
  • MSc in Mechanical Engineering, Microengineering, or a related field
  • Expert in 3D CAD modeling (e.g. SolidWorks, Creo or Siemens NX), including production drawings and GD&T
  • Experience in the optomechanical design of camera, sensor or optical modules, including tolerance analysis; basic understanding of optics is a plus
  • Experience with injection molding for consumer electronic components (part design, mold concepts, supplier collaboration) is a plus
  • Solid knowledge of manufacturing processes such as injection molding, CNC machining, 3D printing and surface finishing
  • An eye for design and finish, with the ability to create prototypes that look and feel like real products
  • Pragmatic, hands-on mindset and the ability to work across optics, electronics and process teams

Questions You are welcome to reach out to hiring manager: Moritz Schmidlin, Head of Modules, moritz@nilt.com

Interested?

Please forward your CV and application letter incl. answers to the 2 questions below, no later than

01.11.2026. We look forward to hearing from you.

1. From (optical) requirements to mechanical design

Describe an (opto)mechanical design you were responsible for: What was your role, and how did you handle tolerances and other technical challenges?

2. Product-like prototypes

Share an example of a prototype or demonstrator that you made look and feel like a real product: Which design choices and manufacturing processes did you use?
