Thermal Protection Engineer
The Exploration Company
Here at The Exploration Company, we are developing, producing, and operating Nyx, a modular and reusable space orbital vehicle that can eventually be refuelled in orbit and that can carry cargo - and potentially humans in the longer run.
We are seeking a talented Thermal Protection Engineer to bridge the gap between laboratory-scale development and full-scale industrial production of our thermal protection systems.
Key Responsibilities:
Industrialisation of Thermal Protection Systems and Other Materials:
Collaborate with the R&D team to transition thermal protection systems from laboratory-scale prototypes to industrial processes, with key phases including Resin Transfer Molding (RTM) and curing.
Identify and optimize key production parameters, ensuring robust process control.
Conduct the industrialisation of post-processing steps, such as surface finishing and inspection, to meet quality standards.
Process Qualification and Control:
Define qualification plans for processes, machines, and tooling to ensure operational readiness.
Implement control and monitoring plans to maintain stability and reliability during production.
Develop maintenance and surveillance systems for production equipment.
Train and qualify operators.
Establishing and Optimising Production Lines:
Define the industrial tools and machines required to meet production cadence targets.
Procure and implement machinery and equipment in the right quantities to ensure operational efficiency.
Manage the entire supply chain, ensuring all components are available and under control to support seamless production.
Production Support and Anomaly Management:
Provide hands-on support during production ramp-up phases to ensure stability and resolve issues.
Monitor production processes and manage anomalies, implementing corrective actions and continuous improvement measures.
Continuous Improvement and Scalability:
Lead initiatives to improve productivity, reduce costs, and ensure scalability for future production needs.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure that designs and processes align with industrialisation goals.
Qualifications:
Education and Experience:
Degree in industrial engineering, mechanical engineering, materials science, or a related field.
Significant experience in industrial project management, process development, and manufacturing.
Technical Skills:
Strong knowledge of manufacturing processes, especially related to molding, RTM & infusion and advanced materials.
Expertise in process qualification and anomaly resolution.
Proven ability to implement quality systems and ensure process stability.
Leadership and Collaboration:
Exceptional leadership skills to coordinate cross-functional teams and manage resources effectively.
Ability to work collaboratively with design, R&D, and production teams to achieve shared goals.
Personal Attributes:
Attention to detail and precision in industrial processes.
Excellent problem-solving and decision-making skills.
Strong communication abilities to ensure clear alignment across teams.
