Life Cycle Assessment Programming Intern
The Exploration Company
Location
Munich, Germany
Employment Type
Intern
Department
EngineeringSystem
Here at The Exploration Company, we are developing, producing, and operating Nyx, a modular and reusable space orbital vehicle that can eventually be refuelled in orbit and that can carry cargo - and potentially humans in the longer run.
We are looking for a Life Cycle Assessment Programming Intern to join our team here in Munich.
Tasks:
In your capacity as Life Cycle Assessment Programming Intern, your role will be continuously evolving. Day-to-day, your responsibilities will include:
To improve internal tools for Life Cycle Assessments (LCA) and further program our implementation scripts in Python (e.g., refactoring for robustness, modularity, and reusability).
To adapt our scripts and data pipelines to the most recent standards for LCA and data collection, ensuring results are traceable, reproducible, and audit-ready.
To perform Life Cycle Assessments (LCA) of our space capsule Nyx Earth and additional products or components under development at The Exploration Company.
To identify opportunities to minimize environmental impact by finding hotspots across materials, manufacturing, operations, and end-of-life assumptions.
To quantify the environmental impacts of design changes and assess trade-offs by comparing scenarios and design options with clear assumptions and sensitivity checks.
To contribute to the development of internal LCA methodologies and documentation, ensuring alignment with current norms and standards and enabling others to run consistent assessments.
To present and communicate your findings clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders across the company, translating results into actionable recommendations.
Potentially (depending on progress), to support internal AI development to help gather and structure inputs for LCA scripts (e.g., extracting relevant data from engineering sources, improving data quality/consistency, or accelerating data collection workflows).
Qualifications:
Bachelor or Master student in Computer Sciences, Engineering, Environmental Science, Sustainability, or a related field with a strong technical foundation.
Good programming skills in Python and motivation to write code that is maintainable (clean structure, documentation, basic testing mindset).
Basic knowledge about Life Cycle Assessment and Eco-Design is an asset, or strong motivation to learn quickly.
First-hand experience or strong academic exposure to Life Cycle Assessment and sustainability tools or methodologies is a plus.
Knowledge of material science, space systems engineering, or product design is a plus.
Knowledge of AI / machine learning is a strong plus, especially if you are excited to apply it to support script development and data collection for LCAs.
Skills and Behaviours:
Ability to work autonomously and in cross-functional teams, collaborating effectively with engineering and product stakeholders.
Analytical mindset and curiosity to explore complex sustainability challenges in space, including working with imperfect or incomplete data.
Advanced skills in programming with Python, ideally including structuring scripts into reusable modules and handling data confidently.
Structured, detail-oriented, and rigorous in documentation and reporting, with a focus on reproducibility and clear assumptions.
Ideally familiar with at least one LCA software tool and/or LCA databases; experience with data processing workflows is a plus.
Positive and solution-oriented mindset, aligned with The Exploration Company’s core values of Commitment, Innovation, Trust, Quality, and Teamwork.
